SA cannabis USE double world average

Cannabis abuse in South Africa is twice the global norm,” CDA deputy chairman David Bayever told the media, law enforcement and international representatives at a presentation. (from the Sowetan)

While the international norm was 4%, in South Africa it was just over 8% of the population who used cannabis, he said.

Bayever said cannabis was the most major drug choice among South Africans.

He also said the cannabis produced in South Africa was more potent than that of most other countries.

According to Bloomberg "South Africa’s use of cannabis, locally known as ‘dagga,’ is double the global norm, Sowetan said, citing Central Drug Authority deputy chairman David Bayever. "

Use or Abuse? Who knows.

SAA crew bust with 5kg's of Cocaine... Naughty naughty..

Fifteen SAA crew members are to be questioned after they were arrested at London's Heathrow Airport on Monday when 5kg of cocaine was found in a bag on their flight. (from IOL)

Investigating officers from Customs and the British Revenue Service would question each of them, Gaiger said.

"Then we'll decide whether we're going to charge them or let them go. We're still trying to find out who the bag belongs to."(the bag with no name...)

Of course in order to put a stop to all of this SAA are going to have to start using sniffer dogs on board the flights as opposed to before and after. Highly trained Doberman with handler — only problem being he can’t get into the front where the pilot and co-pilot are sitting … which is where all the drucks are. Which drives the dog insane. (Thoughtleader)

If this carries on much longer an ordinary SAA flight will entail:

Booking flight
Brief counsel
Application for bail in respect of pilot and crew
Flight
Arrest

Police arrest 2 for cannabis

Western Cape police have arrested two men and seized dagga with an estimated street value of nearly R1m in Bishop Lavis. (from IOL)

Police arrested a 49-year-old man from Delft and a 32-year-old man from Nyanga when they arrived to collect the parcels which contained 21 boxes of dagga, worth an estimated R920 000 on the street. (Gotta love that... "estimated")

Manuel speaks... rubbish!!

Finance Minister Trevor Manuel called for action against drug dealers at an ANC election rally. (from IOL)

"It's chemical warfare launched against our people," he said. "We must act to root it out.

"It's weapons of mass destruction against the children of workers."

Ho ho ho - This is what you get when the Finance Minister talks about drugs.... absolute nonsense. Mr Manuel has no idea how to get any control over the consumption of illicit drugs. Talking tough about drugs is like viagra for politicians and the Lord knows that the ANC and Mr Manuel needs some viagra just right now. To control the sales of drugs you have to know who is doing what and as long as the drugs are illicit Mr Manuel will remain in the dark. Mr Manuel proves that he is a Weapon of Mass Distraction.

Syndicate busted at Cape Town International

Cape Town international airport police had been "making major breakthroughs in the fight against crime, specifically against drugs", National spokesperson Captain Dennis Adriao said. (From IOL)

Adriao gave police arrest figures from all national ports of entry, including airports, harbours and border posts, over the week of 30 January to 5 February. (one week!!)

Eleven people were arrested for possession of dagga with a total value of R170m and another person was arrested for being in possession of 5 690 grams of cocaine worth R1.6m.

Eleven people were caught with R170million worth of cannabis? At R40/gram that is 4 and a quarter tons. Major breakthroughs are being made in how crimes are being reported, because not one "ton plus" cannabis busts has been reported in the last two weeks. That is R15million rand's worth of cannabis on average for each person and none of it is reported?
